history

1960’s - 1980’s

The spirit of art in technology.

The Mesa/Boogie story is a quintessentially American one fueled by genius and innovation, a lot of passion and hard work, and a willingness to try the not-yet-possible.

THE FIRST “BOOGIE” AMP (1969)

Wanting to play a prank, Randall Smith cuts open a little Princeton practice amp, and jams it full of reconfigured high-powered parts. Carlos Santana tries out this wolf in sheep’s clothing, and proclaims, “Man that little thing really Boogies!”

MESA ENGINEERING IS BORN (1971)

Mesa Engineering, a name he makes up on the spot at the County Office, will become known worldwide.

THE MARK I (1972)

After modifying more than two hundred Boogie amps in a converted dog kennel workshop known as the Toneshack, Smith invents a breakthrough high-gain cascading pre-amp architecture, allowing sustain without the need for high volume.

THE MARK II (1980)

At the dawn of a new decade, the company pioneers yet another landmark feature in guitar amplification with the introduction of the world’s first Dual Mode amplifier, the MARK II.
